Alonso is an MN-based sculptor whose work explores the visual relationship between natural and manufactured elements. The natural materials act as metaphor to Alonso. Nature is full of “things that we often take for granted because they are everywhere, but I find beauty in these things because they are universal,” Alonso says. In this way, Alonso explores how immigration is a natural process for every living thing. This idea serves as the main inspiration for most of his work.
For Alonso, being an artist was almost predestined. "Art making, art appreciating, art viewing, has always been a part of my life. Growing up in South America, the idea of being an artist is not unusual." Alonso says of his childhood in Chile. His family has also been supportive since he was very young. “My grandfather was a civil engineer and he introduced me to material, respect of material, and tools. - He taught me how to make things from a very early age.” An artist and engineer since childhood, Alonso pays homage to these influences in his current work. Upcoming, he is working on a piece for an exhibition at Concordia University, where he teaches sculpture and other art classes. The exhibit is entitled Caravan and seeks to further explore the journeys of immigrants. Alonso will be showcasing his work in the Beckman Gallery.
